National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library Relocates

On June 8, 2011 The 1,740 ton National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids finally began its move to a new site 480 feet away and 11 feet higher. This is the largest museum building ever moved for hazard mitigation purposes.

Select Structural Engineering engaged us to assist with structural inspections and reporting of condition assessments for the nearly 17,000 SF museum building. The purpose of the inspections was to document existing conditions and identify any structural deficiencies prior to the move. A post move inspection was also conducted to identify any damage resulting from the relocation above a new parking structure which is part of an ambitious expansion project.

Before it was flooded the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library was the number one visitor attraction in the City drawing more than 32,000 visitors each year. In June 2008 the building took on more than 8 feet of the Cedar River in a record-breaking deluge. The museum's board of directors decided to relocate the building to a higher elevation rather than demolish it and rebuild after determining that moving was not only more sustainable but also a more affordable option.

“It has been very exciting to be involved in this historic event,” says Lance LeTellier, president, Criterium-LeTellier Engineers. “We’re honored to have been chosen for a role in a project so important to the museum and to the community.”
